In taking too many pictures over the years, I've noticed certain patterns and themes that seem to keep popping up in my cache of pictures. Typically I'm not thinking about these themes while taking the photos, but notice them when going back through my pictures. Going forward I consciously take more photos that fit in with these patterns. Maybe I'll make a coffee table book one day...
One of those themes is pictures of the same place, taken both during daylight hours and again at night. It's cool how the exact same place, building, cityscape, etc. can take on a completely different quality and feel all based on the light, or absence of it. This particular post will probably be a work in process as I continue to take photos with the day/night theme.
In June 2006, I visited the Madrid suburb of Pozuelo to help teach a youth basketball camp through Young Life - Spain.
Without realizing it at the time, I took the exact same picture of the Plaza Mayor in Pozuelo at these two different times.
Here is the Vancouver skyline day/night shot. This was taken on a trip to Vancouver while visiting the great Northwest with my two younger sisters. We stayed in a hotel downtown, and a short walk across the Cambie Street Bridge gave great views of the Vancouver skyline. These photos were taken on the south shore, just across False Creek from downtown Vancouver.
One of my favorite cities I've ever been to is Portland, Oregon. Among its nicknames is "Bridgetown" for all the bridges crossing into downtown over the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. These photos were taken from the same spot on the Burnside Street Bridge:
I guess you could say Rome has quite a bit of history. Probably everyone will recognize Rome's Colosseum. I first visited the Colosseum in May 2007, and then again in July 2008. This structure is one of the most fascinating buildings I've ever been in or around - the building itself is interesting architecturally, but the history of what went on in that place is intense.
At night, lights from within the building seep out of the archways to give it an eerie effect, especially when considering its history.
Also while in Rome, there is an old castle, the name I forget, that I caught day on night, but on 2 different trips. The angles are a little different, but close enough.

I continue finding more and more from Rome as I go through my old pictures. See the Trevi Fountain.
Then again in Rome, there is a monument near the Colosseum called "Vittorio Emanuele".
Everyone knows Big Ben. One of London's most famous landmarks, I just had to take one of these. Big Ben's clock at night really stands out against the dark night sky. Taken in June 2007.
Maybe this one is another stretch, but I'll give it a shot. Taken in July 2008, in Prague, Czech Republic.
